Changes to Appendix 3 and Section B of the NASA Rally Sport Regulations!

Attention NASA Rally Sport Competitors!

We are excited to announce that we are releasing changes to Section B and Appendix 3 of the NASA Rally Sport General Regulations for Rallies (GRR). These changes are intended to improve safety and provide clearer guidelines for competitors.

These rules will be in effect after Sandblast Rally.  For Sandblast Rally, competitors may choose to be scrutineered under portions of the new rule set if desired.  For example, many cars have a lithium battery mounted inside the cabin, which will no longer be required to be enclosed in a housing in the new rules.

Key Changes:

  • Roll Cage Grandfathering Requirements: Appendix B no longer contains the new construction roll cage rules, but clarifies the requirements for roll cages in older cars. This includes more specific minimum rollcage requirements.

  • New Roll Cage Construction: The rules for new roll cage construction have been moved to Section 3 of the GRR.  Although previous rules were heavily influenced by FIA standards, we have now adopted the standards as the base requirement with a few modifications.

  • Updated Safety Requirements: There are many smaller changes throughout which increase safety and attempt to offer more options for compliance with the variety of vehicles that compete with NASA Rally Sport.

  • Minor classing changes:

    • Open AWD Light now has a displacement limit which will place a few cars into the Open AWD Heavy class.

    • The minimum displacement for Open 2WD Heavy has been deleted.

    • Sequential transmissions for 2WD cars are now only allowed in the Heavy class

    • FIA pyramid cars now have designated event classes so that it is clear where they will compete.

    • Some rotaries may now compete in Open 2WD Light.

Open for Comment:

We are inviting all competitors to review the changes and provide their feedback. Please use the Google Form link at the top of the rules page to submit your comments. The comment form is always open for use, but we will review all comments received as of March 12th and issue any bulletins needed for corrections at that time.

We encourage all competitors to review the proposed changes carefully and provide their feedback. Your input is valuable to us as we strive to make NASA Rally Sport the best it can be.
